About This Role
The Assistant Teacher’s primary responsibility is the supervision of children to ensure their safety and comfort. The Assistant provides support to the Lead Teacher by focusing children during whole-class activities such as games and stories and by modelling the kind of behavior and speech we want the children to imitate. This program is held primarily outdoors in a playground and in a wooded area.
Prior experience caring for young children is preferred. Experience in Waldorf education, nature-based education, or early childhood education, is welcome but is not required.
What You'll Do
- Work as part of a Lead Teacher and Assistant Teacher team caring for approximately 16 children ages 2 to 6, subject to applicable licensing ratios.
- Support the Lead Teacher in the daily care, supervision, safety, and comfort of the children.
- Participate in snack and lunch with the children and assist with preparation, service, and cleanup.
- Assist with children’s bathroom and diapering needs.
- Help prepare and maintain a welcoming, clean, and orderly classroom, playground, shared spaces, and outdoor environment.
- Participate in circle time.
- Supervise and participate in free play, nature walks, gardening, arts, crafts, and other indoor and outdoor activities.
- Communicate warmly and professionally with families, faculty, and staff.
- Participate in required faculty meetings, mentoring, professional development, parent-teacher evenings, open houses, festivals, and other school events as assigned.
Requirements
Minimum and Preferred Qualifications :
- You must be 18 years or older.
- Education:
- High school diploma; related college-level course work preferred
- Waldorf training or study preferred
- Experience:
- Related work with children, preferably in a classroom setting
- Prior Waldorf study or experience preferred; willingness to participate in ongoing Waldorf professional development required.
- Skills, etc.:
- Works well with children
- Good communication skills
- Calm, gentle manner
- Well-organized, efficient
- Works cooperatively in groups
- Proficiency in handwork (knitting, sewing, etc.) or woodwork preferred
- Musical ability, especially singing
- Reliability and punctuality
- Willingness to learn and implement the school’s Waldorf educational approach
- Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions and to sit on the floor, bend, lift, and physically assist young children as necessary.
- Conditions of employment:
- Employment is contingent upon satisfactory completion of all legally required background checks and submission of required tuberculosis-screening documentation.
Nice to Have
- Current CPR, First Aid, and MAT certifications.
- Waldorf early childhood teacher certificate and experience in Waldorf settings.
